At the recent Institute of Public Works Engineering Australasia (IPWEA) NSW Excellence Awards, Council’s Five Dock Main Street Upgrade project won the category of Design and Construction of a Local Government Project.

“We are beautifying Great North Road as part of our 20-year-vision to enhance the amenity and community infrastructure of Five Dock’s commercial strip, making it a vibrant and attractive place for residents, businesses and visitors,” City of Canada Bay Mayor Angelo Tsirekas said.

“It has been an engineering feat, bringing together the expertise of planning, technical and administrative staff from across Council, as well as liaising with external agencies, and I congratulate staff on our award,” he said.

Stage One involved tree and shrub planting, installation of new furnishings and pavements, relocating the overhead power network to underground, drainage improvements and rationalising street signage.

City of Canada Bay also won an award at the Keep Australia Beautiful NSW 2017 Blue Star Metropolitan Sustainability Awards, in the Cultural Heritage category, for its Cabarita Park Tree Illumination Art project, which showcases best practice heritage management.

Video artist Sean Bacon created projections on two heritage trees in Cabarita Park, including a montage of historical photographs and multimedia portraits of locals.
