GWS Giants call Drummoyne Oval home

| 02 February 2018

On Friday February 9 the City of Canada Bay will host a 2018 NAB AFL Women’s Competition match in a first for Sydney’s Inner West.

“I am thrilled that Sydney’s most picturesque sports ground, Drummoyne Oval, will host the GWS Giants up against traditional AFL powerhouse Carlton in the first match to be played east of Blacktown since the inception of the NAB AFL Women’s Competition,” City of Canada Bay Mayor Angelo Tsirekas said.

“This Friday, Drummoyne Oval will be home ground for Sydney’s only team in the competition. It’s a great opportunity for those living in the Inner West and surrounding areas to come along, support the GWS Giants and see for yourself what is fast becoming one of Australia’s favourite sporting competitions.”

With nearly 200,000 attendees over seven rounds in 2017, the inaugural NAB AFL Women’s Competition was a huge success and hopes for the second season are high. “We are extremely proud to be a part of the 2018 NAB AFL Women’s Competition this year,” Mayor Tsirekas said.

“The establishment of a national women’s AFL league in Australia is a wonderful achievement for the sport and it is great to see other major football codes following suit.”

“Growth in women’s professional sport offers huge opportunities to our local women and girls and it’s something the City of Canada Bay is excited to support now and in the future.”

The Round Two match on Friday February 9 begins at 7.05pm and entry is free for all. With a healthy crowd expected, City of Canada Bay Council urges all planning on attending the match to consider travelling via public transport.

“Entry to the match is free, so jump on the bus to Drummoyne after work or school and enjoy the entertainment and the beautiful water views.”
