Community centres

Community facilities play an important role in our communities. They provide places where people from a range of backgrounds and interests can interact, places where the community can build relationships and a community identity, places and resources where residents can meet, learn, recreate and grow. In many areas they can be the focal point that strengthens the life of the community making it socially sustainable.

The City of Canada Bay provides a sustainable and equitable network of community facilities in the area including:

  • Early education and care centres providing preschool, long daycare and occasional care
  • Early childhood health centres
  • Community venues, offices, meeting rooms and function spaces for hire
  • Community halls
  • Spaces used as a base for outreach services
  • Centres/spaces for delivery of programs and services for older people
  • Youth centres/spaces
  • Indoor leisure centres.

There are currently 124 community facilities provided within the City of Canada Bay. Council owns or has under its care and control 37 (or 30 per cent) of these facilities.

The Connection, Rhodes

The Connection is a multipurpose community precinct of four themed pavilions on the Rhodes foreshore, right next to the Bennelong Bridge.

The Learning Space, The Event Space, and The Meeting Space are all operated by Council. The fourth pavilion, a waterside restaurant called Bare Witness, is leased to a commercial operator. The four distinct spaces are designed around a central amphitheatre and deck that juts out over the river.

The Connection has been designed to be a vibrant place where neighbours can meet new people, take a class, learn something new or just hang out, and where visitors are attracted by its outstanding facilities, art and location.

The Connection webpage has more information including a listing of what's on at The Connection.

Multi-purpose areas

The Learning Space breaks new ground for library services with its focus on digital technology. In fact, there won’t be a (hard copy) book in the place. What The Learning Space will offer is a suite of digital resources and online collections including free Wi-Fi, a 3D printer, A0 plotter, die cutter, sound recording and rehearsal studios, photography and video equipment, and a digital classroom. Open interiors are designed to facilitate collaboration between staff and community members. It will also offer robotics and electronics workshops for all ages throughout the year.

The Digital Gallery is Sydney’s newest exhibition space for video, sound, and digital art. Located in the foyer of The Learning Space, the gallery features a striking digital art presentation wall with eight large screen LCD panels, an AV presentation projection wall, and an integrated sound system. The exhibition program will be curated by dLux MediaArts.

The Meeting Space offers locals beautiful interiors and outlooks to meet for exercise classes, book clubs and other community groups.

The Event Space meets a need in Sydney for a 300-guest capacity venue with water views and advanced AV capabilities that has the flexibility to cater for a variety of events, complemented by breakout rooms in The Meeting Space.

Project background

The community precinct site was originally identified as the location for a community centre in the Renewing Rhodes Development Control Plan (2001), this was re-enforced by the Rhodes West Master Plan (2010). This land is located on the foreshore and is framed by Shoreline Drive and Gauthorpe Street.

The 2001 development control plan allowed for a 550m² building. The revised Rhodes West Master plan (2009) allowed for over double this size to accommodate the needs of the additional population. The Community Facilities Resourcing Strategy (2012) further reinforced the need for a multipurpose community precinct. Consultations as part of the development of the Rhodes Peninsula Place Plan and Rhodes Peninsula Arts Plan further reinforced the needs and aspirations of the growing population of Rhodes. The community has identified a vision for The Connection as a community hub - a place for people to meet, gather and get involved in a range of activities. Residents see it as an opportunity to combine some of the key things that people in the Peninsula like – walking, the waterside experience, places for people to meet and socialise, cafés and restaurants.

Harry's Shed background

Council has supported local interest to develop a Men's Shed in the City of Canada Bay. Harry's Shed is a partnership project between the City of Canada Bay and the City of Canada Bay Men's Shed Inc.

Harry's Shed is named in honour of long term Councillor Jeanette O'Hara and her late husband, Harry, both tireless proponents of the development of a local men's shed.

Men's Sheds are valuable community assets where men and women can meet and build local networks before and after retirement. The benefits of men's sheds are widely recognised and include:

  • Social opportunities to meet and discuss a range of subjects
  • Improved health outcomes
  • Reduced social isolation
  • Broader community benefits through the contribution made by the group.

Council is very pleased to support this initiative locally and is able to provide a local site and a funding contribution towards the program. Harry's Shed is also a proud member of the Australian Men's Shed association.
