Towards zero: tackling dog poo litter

Bag It, Bin It
Bag It, Bin It

As part of Council’s Litter Strategy, we have declared war on dog poo to encourage pet owners to clean up after the pooches so we can all enjoy our open spaces. The target for dog poo litter is ZERO – it’s a dirty habit that stops people from enjoying our parks and open spaces.

We ask every dog owner to help us reach our target. Clean up after your pup, remember to scoop the poop, then bag it and bin it. It's all about showing pride and ownership in the upkeep of our beautiful City and consideration towards others.

Failure to clean up after your dog is an offence and may result in a $275 fine.  You can read more about responsible pet ownership here

The Bag It, Bin It campaign will kick off in Rhodes with a Doggy Day Out event on Sunday, 8 April 2018.

Sustainability officers have been conducting dog poo audits in parks and open spaces across Rhodes to gauge problem areas. Over two days in March, officers counted 181 droppings across seven sites in Rhodes with Phoenix Park Lower recording the highest number (75) and King George V Park the lowest (0). Since the audit, 10 new dog poo bag dispensers have been installed across the peninsula.

The educational campaign will then be rolled out across the rest of the City, including the installation of new dog poo bins and bag dispenser infrastructure in hotspots.
