Celebrate National Volunteer Week This May

| 09 May 2018

Held between 21-27 May, National Volunteer Week is a celebration to acknowledge the generous contribution of volunteers across Australia.

“Volunteers play a vital role in contributing to our community,” said City of Canada Bay Mayor Angelo Tsirekas. “Every year they donate their free time, skills and enthusiasm to support local groups, events and activities that improve the lives of others.”

The City of Canada Bay has a number of services that wouldn’t be able to operate without the unflagging efforts of local volunteers.

Council’s Bushcare program is an initiative that enables community members to participate in the restoration, enhancement and maintenance of natural areas within the City of Canada Bay.

The program allows volunteers to learn about native plants and animals, work outdoors, project plan and meet new people all while earning the satisfaction of seeing an area regenerate and thrive.

Residents can also donate a day each month to the Bay Connection program which takes house-bound seniors on bus trips to places of interest such as the Blue Mountains, historical houses, botanic gardens and other locations in and around Sydney.

These two programs are just a few among a range of tech, library, clean up, craft and other initiatives that allow residents to give back to their community.

“Here at the City of Canada Bay, we have many volunteers who give up their time to keep vital community services and programs going. In the lead up to National Volunteers Week, I would like to personally thank all of our volunteers for their tireless efforts in caring for our environment, including Bushcare, picking up litter, community gardening and other initiatives,” said Mayor Tsirekas.
