$120,000 bin upgrade project

Sustainability | 12 September 2019

The City of Canada Bay has committed $120,000 to upgrade public litter bins across the City, in order to prevent and reduce litter as part of its Litter Strategy.

New robust bin enclosures will replace older litter bin models, in an aim to improve the amenity of local areas and therefore reduce litter.

The new enclosed bins are easy to use, easy to service and prevent birds such as the Ibis from accessing and spreading the litter.

In some instances, bins will be removed or relocated based on the condition and usage of each bin, as well as its proximity to food retailers and foot traffic.

Two litter bin infrastructure projects have now commenced across the City as part of this initiative.

Phase One: 55L and 60L bin upgrades

In September 2019, Council commenced upgrades to 55L and 60L public litter bins across the City.

To help determine which bins required removal or replacement, Council officers assessed the condition and usage of each bin, as well as its proximity to food retailers and foot traffic.

In Rhodes, eight open top litter bins along the foreshore will be removed. Two, large bin enclosures at the North end of the Rhodes Foreshore walk will be relocated

Phase Two: Wheelie bin upgrades

All wheelie bins along The Esplanade and Taplin Park Foreshore, Drummoyne will be replaced by stainless steel bin enclosures.

These new stainless steel bins are more robust and better able to withstand the saltwater air.

Council is committed to protecting our open spaces, parks, and streets and will work with the community to reduce local litter and increase pride in our City.
