City of Canada Bay honours much-loved local Marcus Prentice

Council | 25 May 2023

Last year City of Canada Bay locals were saddened by the loss of Marcus Prentice, a well-known figure who sold The Big Issue in Concord for over 11 years.

To honour his contribution to the local community, the City of Canada hosted a fundraiser for The Big Issue on Friday, 12 May and will also unveil a permanent memorial on Majors Bay Road later in 2023.

“I know I speak for others in our community when I say that, no matter how you were feeling when you walked up to Marcus, after a chat you would walk away feeling better,” Mayor Tsirekas said.

“He loved the village of Concord and, through his cheeky and generous good nature, he became an important part of it.

“This fundraiser was an opportunity to both honour Marcus and raise funds to help The Big Issue continue its important work in the community.”

The Big Issue is an independent, not-for-profit organisation dedicated to supporting and creating work opportunities for people experiencing homelessness, marginalisation and disadvantage.

The fundraiser was a huge success raising over $25,000. Plus, a further $5,000 was donated directly to The Big Issue on the night.

“I would like to thank the City of Canada Bay locals for celebrating Marcus’ life and his contribution to their community and for supporting our ongoing work,” The Big Issue Australia CEO Steven Persson said.
