City of Canada Bay school set to save 59 tonnes a year in carbon emissions

Sustainability | 22 March 2022

Strathfield North Public School installs solar panels as part of partnership between Ausgrid and Solar my School.

The City of Canada Bay has been participating in the Solar my School Program, helping schools make the switch to solar and produce local clean energy, through a partnership with Ausgrid’s Power 2U program.

“We’re pleased to share our resources and knowledge to help local schools reduce their carbon footprint. Our target is for net zero community emissions by 2050 and programs like this are making a real difference,” said City of Canada Bay Mayor Angelo Tsirekas.

“This program helps schools to cut back on carbon emissions and provides an opportunity to teach the next generation about the importance of renewable energy.”

Strathfield North Public School will now be able to use an online tracking and monitoring program, to help students and teachers track their greenhouse savings and further understand solar power and its benefits.

As part of the program, Strathfield North Public School has installed a 17kW system consisting of 37 solar panels. This is expected to reduce their emissions by 59 tonnes a year and help save the school more than $9,000 annually on their electricity bills, which can then be allocated to other valuable leaning resources.

“Schools have large, often-unshaded, roof spaces, high daytime electricity demand, long tenure and a commitment to educating their students about positive environmental actions. With solar, schools can power their learning facilities with locally produced clean energy, reduce their consumption and energy bills, and cut their carbon footprint,” said Solar my School’s Program Manager Anthony Weinberg.

The NSW Department of Education provided half of the funding for the solar project and a $16,000 NSW Community Building Partnership Grant, with the City of Canada Bay providing technical support from start to finish.

Solar my School was jointly founded by Waverley, Woollahra and Randwick Councils to help schools install solar power and is now being rolled out across different Council areas in Sydney and beyond.
