New playground for Five Dock Park

Planning & building | 10 December 2020

The City of Canada Bay has officially opened its brand new Five Dock Park Playground.

Five Dock Park Playground is a modern recreation space with accessibility and intergenerational play at the forefront of its design.

Residents now have access to free outdoor gym equipment, an extensive children’s playground, and a new picnic area with barbecue facilities. All areas of the site are wheelchair accessible and incorporate principles of inclusivity.

The project saw the old playground site relocated to a more central location in Five Dock Park. The new location has better accessibility from the main pathway through the park, is closer to the toilets, offers better surveillance for children’s safety, and is in a higher use area with the sports oval adjoining the space and the skate park nearby.

“The playground provides an opportunity for people for all ages and walks of life to come together,” City of Canada Bay Mayor Angelo Tsirekas said.

“It’s a place to celebrate, support and promote play and a healthy lifestyle no mater your ability.”

The $464,000 project kicked off in late 2019 with extensive community consultation to ensure the space captured the needs of the community.

The playground aligns with the City of Canada Bay’s Lets All Play Strategy, and included a $168,000 grant from the Everyone Can Play Program, an initiative by the NSW Government to create more inclusive playspaces across the state.

“We are the recreational hotspot of the inner west and we are proud of the opportunities we provide our residents to pursue a healthy and active lifestyle,” Mayor Tsirekas said.

“I encourage you to come down to Five Dock Park and enjoy this wonderful new recreation space.”
