The Connection in Rhodes was buzzing with budding scientists this August when Rhodes Science Fair returned to the City of Canada Bay for the second year in a row, bringing a day of scientific exploration and discovery.

Held by City of Canada Bay Libraries, the fair offered activities, demonstrations and presentations suited for all ages, young and all. From introducing artificial intelligence to microscopic explorations of insects, Rhodes Science Fair also offered an opportunity for community to experience a wide range of STEM subjects hands-on.

“City of Canada Bay is proud to offer Rhodes Science Fair as an opportunity for residents and visitors to experience what science and technology has to offer,” says City of Canada Bay Mayor Angelo Tsirekas. “After a highly successful and booked-out event last year, our libraries were excited to bring back a range of science experiences for the community as part of National Science Week.”

This year Rhodes Science Fair had a particular focus on inspiring the next generation of scientists with its diverse lineup of presentations, including a talk on Australian biodiversity by Director of The Young Naturalist, Dr Fiona Benyon, and the return of the popular Liquid Nitrogen Show by Fizzics Education. The family-orientated event also offered opportunities for parents to engage directly with their child’s learning and understandings of science, with Mary Bell from Australian Environmental Education commenting that “parents got to see their kids’ eyes light up” during the Noises in the Night presentation.

Overall, the Rhodes Science Fair was a day filled with enriching experiences that inspired the imagination and encouraged a love for science.

“Like all of our library programs, Rhodes Science Fair aimed to have attendees walking away feeling inspired and more engaged with both their community and the world around them,” says Mayor Tsirekas. “The Fair was once again a booked-out success, and we look forward to growing the event and delivering more science programs for our community in the future.”
