Rhodes Robot Ball is back, and to celebrate, we have a special screening of Jason Phu and Michael Blake's work from Dark Mofo 2023.
At the 2023 Dark Mofo festival, Jason Phu, collaborating with artist Michael Blake, unveiled a captivating 15-minute installation where robotic toys 'sing' and 'come to life.' This exhibition, set at the Digital Gallery, is the video interpretation of this innovative performance.
The video captures the humourous and thought-provoking blend of repurposed toys and custom robotics, all choreographed under DMX lighting. The installation, marked by frantic spinning, drumming, and flapping movements from the toys, set against a monotonous choir, draws on a rich tapestry of influences including Chinese opera, pop culture, and nostalgia, showcasing a clever integration of technology and artistry.
Jason Phu is a 2011 COFA Sydney honours graduate and NSCAD alum, who has been shaped by residencies in Beijing, Chongqing, and Organhaus. He's held numerous solo exhibitions across Australia, won the 2015 AGNSW Sulman Prize; participated in prominent events like the 2018 Dobell Drawing Biennale and the 2022 Macfarlane Commissions; and has recently been titled Vogue's 2024 Living Artist of the Year.
