The City of Canada Bay hosted its annual Spring Clean for Shorebirds at Halliday Park, Five Dock in September.
“The community clean-up was a great success with 85 volunteers collecting more than 50 bags of litter. Thank you to everyone who came along to help prepare our foreshore for the arrival of migratory shorebirds, including the amazing Bar-tailed Godwits,” said City of Canada Bay Mayor Angelo Tsirekas.
“I would also like to thank Judy Harrington from Birdlife Australia, who ran a free bird ID workshop on the day and shared important information about the special bird species that call our foreshore home. It was great to have Judy and her team on hand to answer questions and help residents understand the importance of keeping our foreshore and parks clean for local wildlife.”
The clean-up was held as part of Parramatta River Catchment Group’s Riverfest 2023, which celebrates the Parramatta River and surrounding environment.
The Bar-tailed Godwit is a feature of the Parramatta River and returns to our City each Spring to feed along our foreshore. In recent years, the number of Godwits visiting the area has steadily declined, with key threats being pollution in the river and off-leash dogs in the bird’s breeding areas. Events such as this Spring Clean for Shorebirds offer the community an important reminder to keep our river litter-free.
“Thank you also to Drummoyne Scout Group, who provided the sausage sizzle for our hardworking volunteers on the day of the clean-up. We are delighted that our community was able to come together to care for our environment,” added Mayor Tsirekas.
