Celebrating trees in Canada Bay

Sustainability | 26 July 2024

The City of Canada Bay is celebrating Schools Tree Day and National Tree Day with special planting demonstrations and native plant giveaways across the area!

To mark this year’s Schools Tree Day on Friday, 26 July, Council provided up to 20 free native seedlings to select schools and childcare centres in the area, as well as hosted some hands-on planting workshops to teach local children about the importance of trees and how to care for them.

“It’s important to start teaching children the importance of trees from a young age so they grow up with an understanding of the value of our natural environment and how to care for it,” said City of Canada Bay Mayor Michael Megna.

“I was really impressed that 25 local schools and childcare centres registered to get involved in this year’s event, showing the enthusiasm of our community for nurturing their local environment and helping to building our urban tree canopy.”

This National Tree Day, community members are also encouraged to get involved in growing our local canopy by using available space in their own backyards or balconies to plant more trees. Council is supporting residents to do this by giving away more than 1,000 free native seedlings to residents across three giveaways on Sunday, 28 July and Saturday 3 August.

Giveaways are happening at the following locations:

  • Sunday 28 July, 9am: Five Dock Park, corner of First Avenue and Ingham Avenue.
  • Sunday 28 July, 10am: Corner of Jellicoe Street and Majors Bay Road, Concord.
  • Saturday 3 August, 9am: Drummoyne Markets, St Bedes Church, corner of Church Street and College Street.
