The Environmental Protection Authority has awarded $60,000 to the City of Canada Bay to support litter prevention projects and a strategic plan aimed at reducing litter in our local environment.
The grant was awarded as part of the NSW Government’s Litter Prevention Grants Program and will be used to develop a comprehensive Litter Prevention and Management Plan.
“This funding will allow Council to review and update our current strategy and plan in order to align them with broader regional and state goals, while incorporating targeted programs for key local litter hotspots,” says City of Canada Bay Mayor Michael Megna.
“The grant will also assist Council to foster community partnerships and strengthen litter prevention frameworks across our area, which are key to helping us better tackle the litter issues in our streets and parks,” added Mayor Megna.
Council’s plan will be aligned with the pivotal NSW Waste and Sustainable Materials Strategy 2041, aiming to achieve ambitious goals including a 60% reduction in litter volume by 2030 and 30% decrease in plastic litter items by 2025.
“Keeping our parks, waterways and streets litter-free is important for building community pride, maintaining community safety and to protect local flora and fauna. Over the past five years Council has delivered a range of projects and programs focused on litter education and prevention, and we look forward to continuing our litter prevention journey,” says Mayor Megna.
