Planning & building | 08 May 2023

Upgrades at McIlwaine Park in Rhodes are continuing with the first sections of the new sandstone seawall being installed.

Proudly funded by the NSW Government, the $6.67 million upgrade will include foreshore access improvements so that visitors can enjoy kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, and other fun activities!

Features of the upgrade include:
• Additional pathways and pedestrian lighting to improve access throughout the park.
• A new environmentally friendly seawall incorporating rock pools and living sea tiles to provide a habitat for fish and other sealife.
• Construction of a beach area.
• New accessible barbecue and picnic facilities.
• Native landscaping including the planting of 22 new trees.

Living seawalls
Scientific research in Sydney Harbour has shown that after one to two years, living seawalls already support at least 36 per cent more species than plain, unmodified seawalls with as many as 85 species of invertebrates, seaweeds and fish living and growing on the panels.
