The City of Canada Bay’s Community Strategic Plan, Our Future 2036, identified pedestrian safety as one our community priorities and work is well underway across the area to increase visibility at road crossings.
“We understand that improving community safety is important to our residents, and an imperative part of improving safety along our foreshore walks, cycle paths and at pedestrian crossings is improving lighting,” says City of Canada Bay Mayor Michael Megna.
An investigation found that lighting across many of the pedestrian crossings in our local government area could be improved, and 46 crossings were identified to be included in our Pedestrian Crossing Safety Improvement Program.
As part of the program, Council will be committing $450,000 per year over the next six years to deliver new lighting at pedestrian crossings around Canada Bay.
So far, new light poles have been installed at eight crossings including at Davidson Avenue in Concord and outside Strathfield Train Station, with at least six more to be completed by the end of this financial year.
“Increasing lighting in key areas is an important step towards building a sense of safety on our local streets. Our Pedestrian Crossing Safety Improvement Program will prioritise lighting around schools and transport hubs, to be followed by commercial and residential areas,” says Mayor Megna.
