City of Canada Bay Mayor Angelo Tsirekas last night presented the 2018 City of Canada Bay Sustainability Awards at a gala ceremony at Phoenix Restaurant in Rhodes. The awards, held every two years, celebrate individuals, groups and businesses that show innovation and commitment to creating a smarter, greener and more connected community. The 2018 winners ranged from a popular local craft brewery to a pre-school teaching our youngest members of the community about sustainability. “The profile of these awards has continued to grow every year since we began the program in 2007,” Mayor Angelo Tsirekas said. “This year there were over 120 nominations.”
“The growth of these awards reflects the journey of the City of Canada Bay in making sustainability a community priority.”
Special guest Craig Reucassel joined a host of local identities such as boxer Jeff Fenech and community favourite Jack Nolan at the Gala event in Rhodes, with the City of Canada Bay Mayor making sure the jokes were not left solely to the War on Waste star.
“Thanks to initiatives like the War on Waste, Australians have become far better at recycling everything from household waste to Prime Ministers to Mayors,” Mayor Tsirekas joked.
The inaugural City of Canada Bay Innovation Award was presented to local craft brewery Akasha Brewing Company.
“Akasha are the perfect example of a business successfully transforming not only the space they are in but also activating and exciting the area around them,” Mayor Tsirekas said.
“With their commitment to sustainability, a quality product and a thriving local tasting room they are quickly becoming a part of our area’s identity – it gave me great pleasure to honour them at this year’s awards.”
“I’d like to pay tribute to the winners, and also the nominees, from this year who have all gone above and beyond in their contribution to our community and our quest to be a smarter, more sustainable City.”
