Commercial waste

Our commercial waste services

All properties classified as 'commercial' or 'non-rateable' in Council’s rating system can apply to have Council’s commercial waste service or choose a private waste company for their waste disposal needs. Council offers the equivalent of its residential waste service to commercial and non-rateable properties. However, please note that commercially rated properties are not entitled to the bulk household waste collection, even where the property includes a residential occupation.

Requests for Council’s commercial waste service can be made via an online application form (see below) and the waste service charges are applied to the property owner's rates notice.

What bin sizes are available:

Waste and Recycling Bins are offered in a range of sizes:

  • 120L

  • Recycling (yellow lid) bin: serviced fortnightly only.

An online application must be lodged to commence, increase, decrease or cancel a commercial waste service. A minimum two weeks’ notice must be given for any changes.

Please note: the form must be submitted by the property owner, property manager or other suitably authorised person to act on the owner’s behalf. A business manager can partially complete the form then save and send the link to the relevant owner/manager for signature and submission. Please contact us if you require assistance with form lodgement.

Conditions of Council’s Commercial Waste Service:

Users of Council’s Commercial Waste Service are required to manage and store the bins correctly, for example:

  • Recycling bins must not be contaminated with incorrect materials
  • Bins must not be contaminated with hazardous  materials, eg. batteries, chemicals, building waste or asbestos.
  • Bins must be stored on private property.
  • Bins must be presented for servicing on the public footpath (unless special arrangements have been made).
  • Bins must only be presented on public footpaths for servicing purposes. Bins should be placed on the kerbside the night before the scheduled collection and promptly removed within 24 hours after collection.
  • Bins must be presented with lids shut and must not be overflowing.

Bin storage

Bins should ideally be stored in locations with restricted public access to reduce bins being used by members of the public. However, where this is not possible, it is recommended that you:

  • Clearly label the bins with your business name and/or address.
  • Install locks and chains on the bins (ensure the bins are left unlocked for servicing).

Mixed developments and properties with multiple businesses

Commercial properties may include multiple commercial businesses and residential units. These may be subdivided into strata lots or may be one single lot owned by one owner.

Waste charges are always placed on the owner's rates notice and for this reason the application must be signed by and submitted by the owner. The owner may forward costs of waste to the business via the lease agreement.

Please note: commercially rated properties are not entitled to Council's bulk household waste collections, even where the property includes residential occupation.
